EMS Week School Program.

2011 marks our third year of presenting
our school program. We initially started this program in 2008 for grades K-4.
These students take a field trip to the ambulance service where they learn what
happens in an emergency situation. Students are introduced to equipment that may
be used in such a situation such as the cardiac monitor, immobilization
equipment, pulse oximetry, and the various oxygen delivery equipment. Students
not only learn about them, but we provide a hands-on approach, letting the
students handle the equipment for familiarization. Students are also introduced
to our star player, Ted! (our life-like training and simulation mannequin.
First and second grade students are
encouraged to participate in a coloring contest. The ambulance staff choose one
from the first grade and one from the second grade for the grand prize.
Third and fourth grade students are
challenged with an essay contest as well, in which the students write a page on
what EMS means to them in their community. Again, there is one third grade paper
and one fourth grade paper chosen from those to share in the grand prize.
The grand prize students chosen are
then picked up the following Friday by the ambulance and given a ride to school.
This program has been met with much
success and we look forward to continuing on with it in the following years.
The cost of this program is currently
$800 and has been steadily rising each year. The
costs cover items such as the 'Junior EMT' hats, coloring books, crayons,
pencils, and the various items handed out each year. Educational material is
also covered under this cost. All four grades are also given refreshments while
they visit us and are read a story chosen by the staff each year.
Local businesses this year have
contributed some of the funds in order to make the continuation of this program
possible. Their contributions have been greatly appreciated, however, have only
covered approx. a quarter of the total costs. Our own staff have even given
funds to this program so that the children will not miss out on the program.
Anyone wishing to donate specifically
to this program can contact us regarding options. We
thank everyone for their help in making this program possible and keeping it
such a success!
